Hernán Vera Ruiz, was born in Bolivia and has made his university studies in Argentine, University of La Plata first, where he graduated in physical chemistry with a specialization in Nuclear Chemistry, and later he got a Master Degree and Ph.D. in Radiochemistry at the University of California, Irvine Campus in 1975. Dr. Vera Ruiz has spent two years as a research associated at the Brookhaven National Laboratory in the USA. At BNL he worked on projects related to the utilization of cyclotrons in nuclear medicine and, as radiochemist, in the famous experiment to detect solar neutrinos under the leadership of Dr. R. Davis, whom in 2002 was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for this experiment.
Most of his professional career, for more than 23 years, was at the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna, Austria, as Section Head of the Industrial Applications and Chemistry Section. In this capacity, Dr. Vera Ruiz directed applied research projects related to the utilization of research reactors and cyclotrons in fields such as medicine, industry and environment. In his extensive travels as senior member of the IAEA, he made strong and good friends all over the world, some of whom, are present in the important Summmit-2017.
Since his retirement of the IAEA, Dr. Vera Ruiz is working in his native country, Bolivia, as private consultant, nationally and internationally as well, in matters related to the peaceful applications of nuclear science and technology involving non-energy as well as energy related applications, particularly in aspects related to energy planning and development of nuclear infrastructure.
